49ers football prepares for last home game of inaugural season

The Charlotte 49ers football team (4-5) hosts the Wesley College Wolverines (6-2) this Saturday, Nov. 9 inside Jerry Richardson Stadium in the last home game of the inaugural season.

The 49ers kicked off the inaugural season at home in front of a sold-out crowd of 16,630 in a 52-7 win over Campbell. The team is hoping for similar results on Saturday when they honor seniors Mark Hogan, C.J. Crawford, Mikel Hunter, Alex Petzke, Brandon Strupp and Zeb Little.

Wesley College is currently ranked in the top 25 of the AFCA Division-III Coaches Poll. In the eight games Wesley quarterback Joe Callahan has played, he is 160 of 286 for 2,046 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Wesley’s offense averages 384.4 yards per game compared to Charlotte’s 444.6. Wesley, primarily a passing team, averages 265.2 passing yards per game, but has committed 17 turnovers on the season. The Wolverines average 28.9 points per game.

Charlotte is currently ranked in multiple categories in the FCS as a team:

  • Second in fumbles recovered (14)
  • Third in takeaways (25)
  • 12th in fewest sacks allowed (seven in nine games)
  • 15th in tackles for loss (7.3 tackles for loss per game)
  • 20th in interceptions (11)
  • 21st in total offense (444.6 yards per game)
  • 25th in passing offense (257.7 yards per game)

Jalen Holt and Micah Bryan were granted leaves of absences for the Coastal Carolina game due to personal matters. Holt will be active for Saturday’s game against Wesley College, but Bryan’s leave is indefinite. He is currently inactive.

Kickoff for Saturday’s match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
