The sun disappeared over the tree line adjacent to Transamerica Field as the Charlotte 49ers women’s soccer team (7-4, 2-1) played host to the Roadrunners from the University of Texas at San Antonio (2-9-1, 1-1-1).
It was Alumni Night in the Queen City as the 49ers welcomed back about thirty former players for the game, including former standout Hailey Beam who had her jersey retired at halftime.
The first half of the game saw little action from both sides as only seven total shots were attempted – four for the 49ers and three for the Roadrunners. The only corner of the half was attempted by Maddie Kiebel for the 49ers.
The second half saw a little more pace, especially for the 49ers. Freshman Rebecca Beatty was able to get the 49ers on the board with her first career goal coming in the 63rd minute of action.
Charlotte kept up the intensity as Amanda Jones was able to catch the Roadrunner keeper, Bubba Makela, out of position and sent one to the back of the net from 40-yards out in the 71st minute to give the 49ers a two-goal advantage.
The two goals were all that was needed as the 49ers hung on for the 2-0 victory.
Annika McHenry saw her second start of the season in goal for the 49ers as Alex Kubrick is still sidelined due to an injury. McHenry and the 49er defense held UTSA to only seven shots on the night with only four of them on target.
After the game, Head Coach John Cullen had some words on the team’s performance.
“I feel like we’ve got three great goalkeepers. We’re very blessed as a program to have that quality of keepers,” said Cullen.
“Annika stepped in tonight. She knew the importance of being solid and what we need in that position.”
The 49ers will try to string together a couple wins in conference play with their next match coming at Transamerica Field against Middle Tennessee State. The game is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
