The superhero movie phenomenon continues with an upcoming roster of movies that are sure to please both fanboys and casual movie goers. After an exciting year for both sets of the population, both Marvel and DC move on with plans for their next set of movies. Marvel plans to continue to put their beloved characters on the big screen no matter how obscure. With DC concluding Nolan’s Batman trilogy and another reboot of superman, what can one expect to see from the company in the future?
That’s right: another movie with Batman.
Director Zach Snyder takes the helm together with Christopher Nolan and plans to, like others before him, build a cast of relatively unknowns to take the stage. Man of Steel star, Henry Cavill, is coming back for some more superhuman shenanigans.
The real issue that has consumed the internet this past week, though, is the latest casting choice for Batman: Ben Affleck.
This is perhaps the biggest shocker in the entertainment world today. Is it even possible to get on Facebook or Twitter without reading the aftermath of the new caped crusader? The decision is being met with, and this is putting it mildly, “mixed feelings.”
Out of Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, and even George Clooney’s performance in Batman and Robin; Ben Affleck is already being declared the worst of the Dark Knights and the one to ruin the legacy forever. So how is Snyder justifying the decision to cast such a disapproved actor for the role? After reading all the mixed tweets, it seems hard to see the bigger picture but here are a few things that Snyder has going for him:
- He wanted someone that could portray the complexity of Bruce Wayne’s character. The biggest debate right now is that Affleck may make a good Bruce Wayne after his impressive performance in “Argo,”cbut he will fail in his presentation as Batman. It does not seem that it’s a question of if he can play the rich, orphaned billionaire. Rather, the question is whether he can achieve the presence associated with Batman’s most recent portrayal by Christian Bale or not.
- Ironically, Ben Affleck is actually the biggest actor to play Batman since Adam West. So maybe, his presence won’t be as bad as everyone fears. One can only speculate right now, but if Snyder can find a way to film the frame of Affleck and get a good voice for the character, he may just get the Batman persona that he desires.
- Snyder wanted someone that could portray an older Batman, having the appearance of a seasoned crime fighter as well as have an air of wisdom, and on top of that he wanted someone famous to attract attention from all types of viewers.
While it’s too early to really gauge the true outcome of this casting decision, one thing is for sure: it has most certainly attracted attention from a variety of sources. Whether you love the decision or not, the only thing we can do is let the situation pan out. If Christopher Nolan and Zach Snyder have proven anything in their careers, it’s that they know what they’re doing.
