Over the weekend, my fiancé and I got an inkling for some good breakfast food. IHop was of course packed so we decided to head to Denny’s for all our favorites.
While everything on the menu sounded delicious, and we spent much longer than normal choosing our meals, we had mixed feelings about the food.
We started out by ordering drinks, his usual water and my necessary iced coffee. The coffee was actually good. I was surprised. Nothing to go crazy for, but it was refreshing and came with free refills, which are always a plus.
Chris ordered us the Build Your Own Sampler appetizer with chicken strips, jalapeno bottle caps and the cheese quesadilla. This is where things started to get disappointing. Everything on the sampler tray was very plan. Despite the variety we chose, everything sort of tasted the same.
The cheese quesadilla was thin and could have had different types of cheeses blended together for a more flavorful dish.
The jalapeno bottle caps definitely would have tasted better with some cheese sauce. The chicken tenders were all right, but the flavors of the platter all blended together and made for a rather dull dining experience.
For my meal, I ordered the Fit Fare Vegetable Skillet, which comes with potatoes, peppers, onions, mushrooms and broccoli topped with egg whites scrambled with grape tomatoes and spinach. I also opted to add tortillas.
I was happy with my choice. There were actually a variety of flavors in this dish, and they blended well together. The potatoes had the right amount of crunch on the outside while still remaining soft in the middle.
The onions, peppers and mushrooms were all sautéed and provided a bolder flavor to the dish.
The eggs were scrambled to just the right consistency. The addition of spinach and tomatoes kept them from being bland. I added salsa to it for a little extra kick.
Chris was not as pleased with his dish. He ordered the Grand Slamwich which features all of his favorite breakfast foods: scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, mayo and American cheese on potato bread.
While it had all of the foods he loves, he was dissatisfied. As with the appetizer, the flavors blended together and were all pretty bland. It wasn’t bad, but nothing stood out and pulled his taste buds in.
The sandwich was served with hash browns covered in cheese. They were sort of plain, but nothing a little ketchup and salt couldn’t fix.
We may not have been entirely pleased with our food, but the service was phenomenal. Our server Laura was really helpful and stayed on top of filling our drinks and checking in to see if we needed anything.
Overall, I’d give Denny’s 3/5 stars. It has a warm atmosphere, but there are some obvious improvements that need to be made.
