The Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team defeated the Davidson Wildcats 4-1 on Saturday night at Transamerica Field in their final preseason exhibition game. The 49ers were paced offensively by junior forward Giuseppe Gentile who buried two goals in the first half as Charlotte never looked back after falling behind early on.
The Wildcats came flying out of the gates early on ready to play and scored off of a free kick in just the fifth minute of action. Midfielder Drew Brown found the back of the net off of a beautifully placed ball by Kristian Garciamendez-Rowold to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.
Charlotte didn’t panic though, and battled back to a tie on the first of two Gentile goals in the 29th minute of the game. Gentile received a perfect through ball from Will Mayhew and beat a diving Davidson keeper to knot the score at one goal apiece.
Gentile struck again just seven minutes later in the 36th minute to put the 49ers ahead for good. This time the assist came from fellow forward Monbo Bokar, an NC State transfer, and Gentile blasted the ball into the far side of the net.
“I don’t expect to score every game, but I give it my all to score every game,” said Gentile after the exhibition game.
“I’m going to go in with the same mentality next game and try and put the ball in the net every game.”
The 49ers got two more insurance goals in the second half. The first came on a Will Mayhew header after the ball ricocheted off of the Davidson keeper. Forward Kyle Parker capped off the scoring in the 86th minute after assisting on the earlier Mayhew goal.
“The result was very good tonight even though we didn’t start out the way we wanted, but our response from that moment on was fantastic.” said Charlotte Coach Kevin Langan.
Charlotte will travel to Denver, Colorado to play their regular season opener on the road against the Denver Pioneers on Friday, August 30. The game is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. eastern time.
