For the fourth year, UNC Charlotte students, alumni, faculty, staff and anyone in the Charlotte area is able to donate blood to benefit the American Red Cross through the 49ers for Life Blood Drive.

Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center (SAC), those interested can come by, with or without appointment, to donate a pint of blood.

Anyone who donates blood will receive a pint of ice cream and a t-shirt. Those who donate with an appointment will also be entered to win an iPad Mini. Appointments should be made before Friday, Jan. 18.

“Every unit of blood can potentially save up to three lives.  We all probably know someone who has needed blood transfusions for an emergency, accident or operation,” said Adam King, one of two coordinators for the blood drive.

“Hospitals are in constant need of blood, and without donations, important surgeries can and have been cancelled or delayed.”

King, along with another UNC Charlotte student Jessica Honeycutt, has been involved with the blood drive since the first year it was hosted.

This year as co-coordinators, King and Honeycutt focus on the logistics of the blood drive, ensuring that everything is in order for Jan. 22.

“We have been planning this year’s blood drive since early October, and we have put in countless hours canvassing this campus to make sure we get the word out,” said King.

“On the day of the drive, we will both be there for nearly 16 hours to manage all facets of the event.”

King feels this is becoming a tradition at UNC Charlotte, also serving as a competition among public North Carolina universities.

This year the unofficial donation goal is 1,000 units of blood.

“I think we have the potential for meeting this goal if everyone does their part by showing up to their appointment times, spreading the word and participating in our marketing promotions,” said King.

“We have exceeded our goal for all three years of this drive’s history, so I am hoping we are able to do so again this year.”

Volunteers are still needed for the day of the blood drive. Those interested in volunteering can sign up via the Google Document for the volunteer schedule accessible at

To sign up for a donation appointment, visit and use the sponsor code “49ers for life.” While walk-in donations are accepted, those individuals will not be entered to win an iPad Mini.

“The best part of working on the blood drive is collaborating with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff who are all so dedicated to this cause,” said King.

“This event brings many student organizations and departments on campus together to work for common causes – help those in need, increase school spirit and enrich traditions.”
