Venture department provides campus adventures for students
UNC Charlotte held their annual Student Organization Showcase Wednesday, Aug. 22, to help new and returning students discover all the campus has to offer and what kinds of events will be going on throughout the coming semester.
With over 350 student groups and organizations on campus it can often be difficult for one to stand out of the crowd, but Venture was doing what they could to make sure students are aware of the activities they are putting on during the fall semester.
Although Venture was in attendance at the Student Organization Showcase, it is actually a department on campus that seeks to educate students on the wonders of the outdoors. Venture sponsors several events and trips during the year geared toward giving students the skills necessary to survive and have fun in the great outdoors.
Venture has already hosted an event in conjunction with Week of Welcome called WoW! What a High! Here students made their way to the High Team Challenge Course, located near the Harris Alumni Center, to test their climbing and teamwork on the high and low ropes.
According to Office Manager of the Venture Program, Ellen Wilkinson, this event was “one of the only open houses they have on the course.” Otherwise groups must schedule time with Venture in order to tackle the course.
Venture’s first AdVenture trip will be Friday, Aug. 31, through Monday, Sept. 3. The group will visit Hot Springs, N.C.
This trip is made for first-year students to become acclimated with Venture while also “building solid friendships” and “enjoying the outdoors.”
The group will camp, whitewater raft and hike on the trip. Trips like these are not infrequent, but are also not the only thing that Venture has to offer.
“This isn’t a club,” said Wilkinson. “We are actually a department. We have academic classes.”
Venture brings students classes such as Wilderness Experience and White Water Kayaking, and Venture Director, Sandy Kohn, teaches Introduction to Outdoor Adventure.
These classes offer hands-on experience to students through participation in weekend outdoor trips and are offered through the Department of Kinesiology.
Venture will hold their first interest meeting Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union room 340DE. The meeting is open to all who wish to attend and free pizza and games will be provided.
