UNC Board of Governors approves tuition increases for UNC system

This past Friday the UNC Board of Governors approved an average tuition increase of 8.8 percent across all public universities in North Carolina.  Some universities planned for a larger increase for the 2012-13 school year, but UNC system President Tom Ross urged for the tuition increases to be capped at 10 percent.

UNC Charlotte originally approved a 6.5 percent increase, but at the meeting the increase was raised to a 7.8 percent increase for in-state students and to a 6.8 percent increase for out-of-state students.  This is in addition to the increase of $106  in student fees, which will be implemented for the fall 2012 semester.

During the hearing for the tuition increases many students gathered to protest, but of the 100 students that protested only one was arrested.

UNC Pembroke had the lowest increase with a 4.3 percent increase for in-state students and a 1.4 percent increase for out-of-state students.

The two univeristies with the highest increase were Western Carolina University and Winston-Salem University with a 9.9 percent increase for in-state students.  Western Carolina approved a 3.5 percent increase for out-of-state students, and Winston- Salem approved a 3.6 percent increase for out-of-state students.
